Hey everyone, I'm a newbie Linux sysadmin with about four years of personal experience and a background in general IT support. I've always aspired to be a system administrator, especially in Linux, and I genuinely love my job. Despite this, I find myself grappling with anxiety. When I transitioned from being a field tech, I assumed the responsibility would feel natural over time, but it hasn't. Although I generally trust my abilities, when problems arise that take longer to solve, I become overly critical of myself, which makes it harder to reach out for help when needed. Have others experienced this kind of anxiety in their early days? Does it relate to imposter syndrome?

Just remember, your job isn't as critical as other professions. Unlike emergency room doctors or firefighters, you're not dealing with life-and-death situations. Sure, clients might freak out when systems go down, but it's all fixable. Embrace your nerves as a sign that you're cautious and care about your work. Mistakes will happen, and that’s part of the learning curve—just keep your perspective!
Totally! I support critical systems too, but I remind myself it’s not life or death. Staying calm helps.
It’s perfectly okay to ask for help early on when you're stuck. I've learned that it’s way more effective than waiting until a small issue snowballs into a bigger one. Keep track of the steps you take; it helps those who assist you see where you went right or wrong. You'll learn faster!
Sounds like you’re dealing with imposter syndrome. Now that you know the term, consider yourself part of the club! I felt it too when I started; it can be strong. Don't hesitate to find effective ways to manage it, as many in the industry have experienced similar feelings.
I hear you! I went through a lighter version of it before, but this has been overwhelming. Exploring new strategies to cope could help.
You're definitely not alone in this! Most new sysadmins feel overwhelmed at some point. The issues you encounter usually stem from things you haven't come across yet, and as you gain experience, those gaps will shrink. Embrace mistakes as learning opportunities—every time you encounter a problem, it’s a chance to grow. Just give yourself some grace; you're still pretty new to this!
It’s easy to overthink everything, especially when you want to get things right. Just keep in mind that some problems take time to resolve. Being hard on yourself won't help—trust your knowledge and focus on researching what you don’t know. It’s normal to face new challenges that take a while to work through, and even veteran admins still encounter them!
I get it, overthinking is tough. Working on building my confidence in my skills has been a game changer for me.

Right? I have a saying I repeat: It ain't the hospital. No one's dyin'. Keeps things in check!
