Dell Laptops Not Detecting Dual Monitors Correctly When Docked

Hey everyone! I'm reaching out because we've hit a frustrating snag with our company's Dell laptops. For the past couple of weeks, we've noticed that when these laptops are connected to a USB-C dock, they only recognize dual monitors as a single screen in either duplicate mode or show just the laptop's display alongside the external screens. We first thought it was a driver issue affecting just a few users, but soon our entire IT team started experiencing the same problem. After extensive troubleshooting, we couldn't find a solution. Dell is pointing fingers at the docks, which seems odd since they're standard USB-C DisplayPort docks that shouldn't need specific drivers beyond what the laptops require. Strangely, if we drain the battery completely, the monitors can work for about two hours before they merge back into one screen. This issue is present across various models like the Dell 16 Pro, Dell 15 Pro, and Inspiron 3340, and it's affecting over 30 users across three countries. Other brands like Lenovo and Asus work fine with the same docks, and a few Dell laptops that we haven't powered on in a while still work perfectly. We even tried rolling back drivers without success. Has anyone else encountered this problem recently? We're in a dilemma here, considering switching to different laptop brands or investing in Dell docks that use DisplayLink drivers.

Have you tried installing DisplayLink? It might help with this monitor detection issue if nothing else has worked yet.

I’m not sure if it’s a separate app. It’s been a minute since I last dealt with it!

It sounds like you might need to check the Dell Peripheral Manager. It has a feature that combines two screens into one larger display, although I’m not sure why it’s causing this issue. It could have auto-downloaded on some machines, so maybe that's a clue!

We have over 100 Dell laptops using various WD19 docks and Dell monitors, and we haven’t had any of these issues. Maybe try uninstalling the Dell hardware manager? Also, it could be a Windows update causing the problems. If you can, try a fresh Windows 11 install without connecting to the internet to see if the issue persists. Don’t forget to check for firmware updates for those docks, too.
