Did I Mess Up My Computer by Trying to Install Linux?

I think I've really messed things up trying to install Linux Mint while waiting for my new hard drive. My current hard drive is busted, so I ordered a new one, but couldn't resist playing around with my computer in the meantime. I followed a tutorial up to the installation screen but realized I was wasting my time since I didn't have a working drive yet. I ended up uninstalling Windows, and now I'm stuck. Every time I try to use my USB to install Linux, it says that "mmx64.efi is missing." I turned off secure boot and tried the usual fixes. Also, when I try to access the USB to change some files around, it won't let me make changes like I could before, which I find bizarre. I think it might be a partition issue, but I don't have access to another computer to fix it since I can only use my school-issued Chromebook and it's limited in what I can do. I used my phone to try to flash the USB but it didn't work like it did the first time with Balena Etcher on a different computer. Any thoughts on what's going on? I really want to get my computer back to a working state!

Good news is that since your primary drive was already failing, you were going to need to reinstall the OS regardless. So, in a way, you're not worse off now. That said, you're going to need to find a way to flash a new image onto a USB drive. Even if you want to go back to Windows, you'll need to flash the Windows image onto a drive to install it. Until your replacement hard drive arrives, you won’t be able to install anything anyway.

True! You might want to ask a friend or family member to help you create a USB drive with the OS installer you want, especially if that's your only computer. Also, consider getting a new USB drive; your current one could be damaged, which might explain those missing boot files.
