I'm working with an MSI Pro B660-A DDR4 motherboard, which has a cooling plate for one of the M.2 SSD slots. I've just purchased another M.2 SSD to expand my storage, similar to the one already in the slot with the cooling plate. However, the other M.2 slots don't have the capacity for a cooling cover. I'm wondering if I can use another M.2 SSD in those slots without a heatsink or any cooling solution.

For typical usage, your SSD's PCB and modules should handle the heat well. If you’re monitoring temperatures and want to keep it cooler, you might look into a heatsink that fits well and looks nice with your motherboard. You can find lots of designs, even some with RGB lighting if you’re into that aesthetic!
It really depends on the SSD model. Generally, Gen3 drives don’t need cooling. Most Gen4s are fine too, but a few may require it. When it comes to Gen5, cooling is usually necessary. If you’re looking for something, third-party heatsinks like the Arctic M2 Pro or Thermalright TR-M.2 are affordable options that can help.
You shouldn't really need a heatsink for casual use, but there are plenty of heat sink options available if you look around. Some smaller heatsinks come with thermal glue so you can easily attach them where needed.
You can run it without a heatsink; it should be fine! Just keep an eye on the temperatures during use.

Thanks for the info! Just to clarify, the Samsung 980 is a Gen 3, right? I read that online but wanted to confirm. Also, I appreciate the suggestion about the third-party heatsinks!
