I'm currently running a Gigabyte Windforce RTX 4090 with an Intel i7-14700k, 2x 48GB DDR5 RAM, a 4TB NVME, and a Z790 Tomahawk motherboard, all powered by an 850W PSU. The 4090 works great, but I'm planning to upgrade to the Gigabyte Windforce 5090, which comes with a recommendation for a 1000W PSU. Is the 1000W recommendation to account for more RAM, a higher power CPU, and additional storage? Do you think my existing 850W PSU can handle this upgrade, or should I go ahead and get a new power supply?

Since you mentioned the 4090 is still doing great for you, it's worth noting that some look at power limiting the 5090 to save on power consumption, but that's a bit of a gamble. Given your CPU's draw, I’d suggest sticking to a strong PSU recommendation for such high-performance gear.
Honestly, I wouldn't risk it with your current setup. Go for a more powerful PSU—I would suggest getting at least a 1000W. Better safe than sorry, especially considering the 5090's performance and power draw.
If you're looking for peace of mind, just grab a 1600W PSU. They're relatively cheap compared to the potential headaches of an upgrade. Plus, once you get a new PSU, you won't have to worry about upgrading for a while!
Your 850W setup is nearly maxed out, especially since the 5090 can pull up to 600W during gaming. If you want to keep your components safe and functioning optimally, I'd upgrade to at least a 1000W PSU, maybe even higher, to give yourself some breathing room.
Check out reviews for options within the 1200W range, you might find a good deal!
The price for a good PSU can be hefty. Are there any affordable brands you recommend?
