Do I Need a Second CPU Power Cable for My New Motherboard?

I built a PC four years ago with an XPG Core Reactor 850W power supply, and now I've upgraded to an X870 motherboard. This new motherboard requires two PSU to CPU 12V 4+4 cables, but I only have one available. Can I just buy any random 4+4 PSU cable to use?

It's not safe to buy just any cable. PSU cables vary by manufacturer, and using the wrong one could harm your components. Fortunately, a single 8-pin connection can supply sufficient power for your CPU under normal conditions. You likely won't need that second connection.

Actually, AM5 CPUs don't draw enough power to require both cables. So, you're good with just the one! But make sure you connect it to the right port on your motherboard.

You shouldn't just grab any random 4+4 PSU cable since they're not standardized on the PSU side. However, for AM5 CPUs, like the Ryzen 7700x, you might not even need that second cable—one should be enough! What CPU do you have?
