I recently built a new PC using an Asus Prime X870-P WiFi motherboard along with a 9850X3D CPU and some RAM I bought as a combo from Microcenter. After assembling everything, I noticed that the motherboard and PSU don't show any signs of life when powered on—despite trying some basic troubleshooting steps. I tested the PSU, and it turned on while the switch was in the 'off' position when connected to a tool that shorts the power pins. However, when I switch to 'on', it shuts off. I'm wondering if this issue could be due to the motherboard not recognizing the 9850X3D without a BIOS update, since it's a newer CPU. I'm quite new to building PCs, so any help would be appreciated!

It's likely that a BIOS update is needed. The 9850X3D support was introduced with BIOS version 1066, released last June, so your motherboard might have an older version. The good news is that your board supports BIOS flashback, which means you can update it even without a compatible CPU installed. Exactly! That should solve your issue!
You can easily verify the CPU support on the motherboard's support page. Check this link for details: https://www.asus.com/motherboards-components/motherboards/prime/prime-x870-p-wifi/helpdesk_qvl_cpu?model2Name=PRIME-X870-P-WIFI. It's confirmed starting from BIOS version 1066. You should see if your board has that version.
Awesome, so there’s no way to tell what BIOS version I have when I bought it, right? Can I just flash it without issues?
Yes, make sure to keep your BIOS updated regularly for stability, especially since there have been concerns with the Ryzen 9000X3D CPUs overheating on some ASUS boards. Here's a helpful statement from ASUS about it: https://press.asus.com/news/statements/official-asus-statement-on-recent-asus-amd-800-series-motherboard-and-amd-ryzen-9800-x3-d-concerns/. Also, remember to update your USB 4/PD firmware for optimal performance too. The recommended steps are: 1. Update BIOS 2. Install Windows 3. Install drivers 4. Stability test your PC 5. Enable XMP/EXPO/DOCP 6. Stability test again. You can also find the latest drivers on the official sites!

Thanks! I looked it up and my motherboard was made in April 2025, so hopefully that's the issue. I'll update once I get a chance!
