Do I Need Web Development Skills to Start Learning AI/ML?

Hey everyone! I'm new to the tech scene and feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the paths I could take. I'm currently an engineering student and have a year to build my skills. Recently, I became really interested in AI and machine learning and started a course on Python for Data Science for Beginners. My goal is to dive into Python, data science, and ML concepts.

However, everywhere I turn, I see discussions about HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and various frameworks like React and Next.js, not to mention other topics like DSA and System Design. It's a lot! I've heard that I need to master all of these technologies before even considering a path into AI. So, I'm just wondering—am I heading down the wrong track by focusing on AI/ML right now? Should I really start with web development first, or is it okay to stick with Python and AI? Any insights would really help me out—thanks!

If web development is overwhelming you right now, AI could be just as challenging, if not more! Both fields require similar problem-solving skills and the ability to process and absorb information quickly. If you're not enjoying front-end work, you might not enjoy tackling AI challenges either, which also come with their own steep learning curves. Just being honest—finding a domain you're passionate about will make the struggle worthwhile!

Thank you for your honesty! It’s definitely something I need to think about. I feel more connected to the types of challenges in AI, which makes me wonder if I should continue down this path instead.

Exactly! Finding something you love can make a world of difference in how you perceive challenges.

Web development skills are totally unnecessary for AI/ML. Focus on math and learn Python, just like everyone suggested! That foundation will serve you way better than any web dev skills will.

I’m feeling lost too when it comes to choosing my path. I have dreams of landing an internship in AI, but I’m hearing differing opinions. Do you think I should explore software development to build a better profile?

While some companies appreciate software development backgrounds, you can still aim for AI positions directly. It's all about your passion and willingness to learn!

Absolutely not! You just need to focus on learning math—things like calculus, linear algebra, and statistics are really important. Programming is necessary too, but you don't need profound web dev skills unless you're aiming for something like web scraping. SQL can come in handy here too. You’ll pick up any web skills you need along the way if they become relevant!

No, you definitely don't need web development skills to get started with AI and ML. The key is to have a solid understanding of mathematics and to learn Python, which is a critical language in this field. If you're looking for a good place to start, check out the course "Python Programming 2025" offered by the University of Helsinki. It’s a great resource!

I agree, but just to add, having a basic knowledge of SQL can be super useful, especially when working with datasets in ML. You don't need a deep understanding of web development for AI.

Well said! Just remember, math is really the backbone of AI/ML, so focus on that as well.
