I'm considering getting a UPS to protect my PC, which has an 850w PSU, because my home power situation is pretty unstable with frequent outages. I've narrowed it down to four options:
1. APC BX1500M (1500va/900w) - $144
2. Vertiv Liebert PSA5 (1500va/900w) - $152
3. Goldenmate (1000va/800w) - $168
4. Goldenmate 2025 Pro (1000va/800w) - $190
My main concern is whether I need a UPS that exceeds my PSU wattage, even though my computer probably never uses the full 800w. Also, I've noticed that only the Pro version of the Goldenmate has a communication port, which I believe is needed for the auto shutdown feature. If I'm not home to shut the computer down when the power goes out, would the UPS be useless? I really like the Goldenmate because of its superior LiFePO4 batteries, but I'm struggling with the wattage and shutdown feature issues. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

When choosing a UPS, definitely consider the total wattage you'll be using, including your monitor and any other devices. It's not just your PC that needs power! Also, make sure the UPS has enough outlets for everything. Personally, I always go for units with pure sine wave power, as those work better with modern PSUs. Getting a reliable UPS means your system won't shut down abruptly during outages, plus you'll have solid surge protection.
Honestly, I don't think auto shutdown is a must for everyone. If I’m not around and the power goes out, it's likely I've already shut down or put my computer to sleep. I see the UPS as a safety net while I'm actively using the PC, especially for critical tasks. But for servers or truly important work, that might be a different story. Right now, I’m using a CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD, and it's been good for me.
