Do I really need an H1 tag on my website?

I'm working on my first website design, and I'm not sure how essential H1 tags are in this case. My home page features a map as its main element right below the navigation bar, and I want to avoid wasting space either above or below it by adding an H1 tag. I've looked at some examples, like Airbnb, which has a tiny, invisible H1 tag that feels like an accessibility issue. John Muller from Google mentioned that it's okay to use multiple H1 tags or even none at all, but it just feels wrong not to include one at all. What do you think? Is there a way to include an H1 tag that won't disrupt the user experience?

Though H1 tags can help with SEO, Google is smart enough to understand the structure of your page through other elements as well. Just keep in mind that you want your site to be accessible in the long run, even if it doesn't seem critical right now.

In general, it's best to include an H1 tag for accessibility reasons. Screen readers rely on headings to announce the main purpose of a page. Even if you're trying to create a seamless user experience, H1 tags help with navigation for users who need it. You might consider using an 'sr-only' approach where the text is only read by screen readers and not displayed visually.

That sounds like a smart move. Hiding text for screen readers is a good compromise that keeps your design clean while still being accessible.

Honestly, I've gone without an H1 on some of my sites too. While I understand the importance of accessibility, sometimes it feels okay to prioritize user experience, especially if it’s for a unique design like yours.

Omitting the H1 tag isn't a dealbreaker, but it's like skipping a seatbelt. Most days you’re fine without it, but it's important to have for safety's sake! Just be careful with how your design impacts accessibility.

You should include an H1 tag, especially since it helps with accessibility standards. Even if it feels unnecessary for your design, it’s important for screen readers. There are methods to include an H1 without it being visible to everyone, but it still needs to serve its purpose for screen reader users.

That's true! I've also read that while accessibility isn't a direct ranking factor for Google right now, it could become one in the future, so it's good to plan accordingly.
