Does AI autocomplete hurt your coding skills?

Hey everyone! I'm currently in college and have a good amount of programming experience since I do it daily. I'm thinking about using AI autocomplete tools like GitHub Copilot to help speed up my coding, especially for repetitive stuff like HTML, since I'm not the fastest typer at around 60-70 wpm. But I have this nagging concern: will relying on AI tools harm my programming skills in the long run? I've heard mixed opinions about whether they turn you into a 'vibe coder'— someone who relies heavily on tools without truly understanding the code. What do you all think? Have any of you experienced a decline in your coding abilities after using these tools? Also, if there are simpler, cheaper alternatives that just offer unlimited autocomplete, I'd love to hear your recommendations. Thanks for reading!

It can definitely make learning harder if you let it. But if you're committed to mastering programming, you can still use AI to your advantage while making sure you understand what it generates. So, mix and match and keep coding actively!

I get where you're coming from—using AI to write code can feel like delegating your learning process. Make sure you balance it out by challenging yourself to solve problems without aid. You don’t want to lose touch with the fundamentals.

I think it really depends on your goals. If you're looking to improve your programming skills, practicing coding without shortcuts is essential. But if you need to build things for clients or focus on understanding broader concepts, then AI autocomplete can be a great help. Just remember, relying too much on it can diminish your coding proficiency over time.

In my experience, using autocomplete tools can impact your ability to remember syntax. Sure, it's handy to have a tool fill in the gaps, but it might hurt your retention of key concepts. I recommend using it with caution—rely on it only when necessary, and don't forget to practice coding without it too.

While I see the appeal of autocomplete, I believe it can make you less proficient with coding syntax if you aren’t careful. If you can’t picture the code in your head, it’s a sign you need more practice before leaning on these tools.
