Does Using Internet Searches Ruin ChatGPT’s Responses?

I've noticed that when ChatGPT searches the internet, it tends to lose its quirky personality—like the snarky comments and clever jokes that I enjoy. I'm curious if others feel the same way. Is there a way to stop ChatGPT from using internet searches entirely? I've tried using memories, but it still searches anyway.

Absolutely! It's the worst when it starts acting robotic after a web search. I’ve thought about disabling the web feature, too, but I worry about missing out on real-time info. It’s a tough balance!

I’ve had a similar experience. It’s like the moment it goes off to search the web, it gets overwhelmed and loses its groove. If you just say something like, "Hey, that was the search tool, not you!" it can help steer the conversation back. It's frustrating because the random stuff from the search doesn’t make it to the memory, so it can’t utilize that context later.

Totally agree! When it uses real-time tools, it seems to forget a lot of the guidelines that keep the conversation flowing naturally. I have to remind it not to use those tools whenever we start a sensitive topic. It’s a hassle, for sure.

Yeah, I feel the same! Web searches mess things up drastically. The responses get cluttered with irrelevant info and it seems to lose track of the conversation's context. You can turn off those features in settings and also explicitly tell it to stick to direct generation without searching to get better results.
