Experiencing Performance Issues After About an Hour of Gaming

Hey everyone, I'm reaching out because I'm facing some frustrating performance issues while gaming. Here's a quick rundown of my setup: I'm using a 9800X3D processor with an RTX 4090 graphics card and 32GB of Corsair Vengeance RAM (using the DOCP profile since my motherboard supports it). I also have a 1000W Gold Rated Thermaltake PSU.

Recently, while playing Silksong, I noticed that after roughly an hour, the game started to stutter significantly, along with sound issues and input lag where my controller inputs were delayed. I initially thought it was a game-specific issue, but then I tried playing Cronos: The New Dawn and encountered the same problem. No matter the game I tested—ranging from low to high requirements—the issue persists. Restarting my system temporarily solves the problem, but after another hour of gameplay, it comes back.

I observed the following:
- Task Manager shows consistent performance; no major spikes in HDD, RAM, or CPU usage.
- The GPU utilization spikes to around 75% with Silksong during the stuttering and drops to about 39-40% after rebooting.
- VRAM utilization remains consistent regardless of the stuttering.
- There was more free space on the OS drive post-reboot, which makes me wonder if there's a shader cache issue.

Reboots clear the problem temporarily, hinting that something needs to be reset. Here's what I've tried so far:
- Updating GPU drivers
- Performing a clean reinstall of the GPU drivers
- Switching DOCP profiles

I'm out of ideas here. Any suggestions on what could be causing these performance drops or what I could try next?

From what you've described, it might be worth looking into your SSDs as well. Since your OS is on a pretty old SSD, it could be impacting performance, especially if it's struggling with read/write speeds. If your other drives are NVME and fast, ensuring your games are running on those is great, but the OS drive might still affect overall system performance. Consider checking the health of your OS drive or even swapping the OS to a newer SSD if possible.

It sounds like you might be hitting some sort of thermal throttling. Double-check the temperatures of your CPU and GPU when you're experiencing those stutters. Sometimes, even if the temps seem okay, they can fluctuate under heavy load, causing spikes that lead to performance drops. You mentioned your GPU temps are around 59-61°C, and your CPU is at 70°C, which seems reasonable, but it’s worth monitoring closely during gameplay to see if they spike unexpectedly.
