I've been a software engineer at a smaller company for a couple of years, and while working remotely has its perks — like a lower cost of living and no commute — I'm starting to feel like the negatives are becoming too much to handle. I feel pretty isolated since there's not much bonding happening with my teammates. Unlike my last job where I made some good friends, here I struggle to connect with anyone, and it's tough seeing how close-knit everyone else is. I'm also being nudged towards a team lead role, but I don't feel prepared for that since I don't know my teammates well enough. With my experience, I feel like I'm expected to take on this responsibility, but it just adds to my stress. To make matters worse, I think I'm facing burnout and possibly depression. I want to hold on for a few more months to build my emergency fund, but I could really use some advice or to hear from others who might have been in a similar boat.

Have you thought about using your remote work flexibility to make friends outside of your job? It can really help with the feelings of isolation. Having a support system outside of work can do wonders for your mental health!
I totally get that. I live in a small town too, so meeting people can be tough. Thank goodness for my girlfriend who helps keep my spirits up!

This may sound silly, but how do you find friends outside of work? I don’t have many options around my area and feel out of place trying to join clubs.
