Feeling Lost Without a Mentor During My Internship

I've started my first internship and it's been a week. Initially, I had a briefing on what the company does and the software they're working on, but since then, I feel like I'm not really contributing anything meaningful. I spoke to HR about a mentor, and while they mentioned one would be assigned, it hasn't happened yet. I was advised to discover the company and talk to my colleagues, but it feels a bit overwhelming. Should I just keep asking my coworkers about their work and tools, or is there a better approach to get more involved?

I suggest you bring up the idea of taking on a small task in the next daily meeting. Maybe see if you can help with a simple refactor or something manageable that can add value to the team. It seems like your company might not have a solid onboarding process for interns, which is a bummer. Just take the initiative and keep asking your colleagues for guidance while you’re figuring things out!

That’s a great idea! Shadowing someone could really help you understand the workflow better. Don’t stress too much about making significant contributions; getting familiar with the team and how things work is already a win.
