Feeling Overwhelmed in My Software Engineering Program – Need Guidance

I'm in my second year of studying Software Engineering and feeling pretty lost and scared. I've been working on my coding skills for about a year and a half now. I've gotten comfortable with Java, which is my favorite language, and I have some knowledge of SQL, OOP, and a bit of C#. I even collaborated on a project where we built a PayPal-inspired web app using CRUDs, DTOs, Databases, and APIs.

However, I've realized that I'm not really interested in front-end development and prefer back-end work, especially connecting SQL to APIs and watching everything work in real time. Lately, though, I feel like I'm just going through the motions to pass my classes. Data structures were tough for me, and I can hardly remember the material. Although I try to limit my use of AI for coding help, I've found myself relying on it, especially when deadlines are looming.

I feel a bit useless because I'm forgetting things and the excitement I initially had has turned into dread. I'm scared that I won't fit into the tech industry and that I might fail. While I enjoy coding, I'm struggling with concepts like Data Structures and Big O notation. Living in Costa Rica, I know most job opportunities are outside my country, and while my English is strong, I realize I need more than I currently have to land a stable and well-paying job. I would really appreciate any advice or thoughts you might have, no matter how tough it may be!

It's totally normal to feel overwhelmed, especially with subjects like Data Structures and algorithms. Many developers don’t truly grasp these concepts during their studies. Knowing them becomes essential as you reach mid-level positions, especially if you want to apply to major tech companies. But don't stress too much now; focus on building your skills gradually. Smaller companies might not even prioritize these concepts as much. Just take it one step at a time!

I hear you! I struggle with remembering everything too. It just seems so abstract sometimes!
