Feeling Trapped in a Toxic Startup – Need Advice

Hey everyone,

I'm a recent engineering grad who switched to IT after completing a DevOps course. Last year, I landed a job at a startup, but things have taken a turn for the worse. My boss seems to be playing mind games, and the company culture is super shady. Some coworkers have faked their experience, claiming 8+ years when they actually don't have the skills. They rely on us freshers to take control of clients' laptops remotely and even pretend to be these experienced workers in meetings.

Unfortunately, we're not receiving any real training in important areas like DevOps or security, yet we're expected to deliver on projects in those fields. I tried addressing my concerns with my boss, but he just brushed me off. Although we're supposed to have weekends off, he pushes us to work during those times, claiming it will balance out later. Plus, we have to use our personal laptops for sensitive client work, putting their data at risk. If projects slow down, he cuts our salaries, but raises them again when new projects come in.

This job is draining me mentally, and I'm in a tough financial situation, so quitting feels risky. I'm really looking for any advice or if anyone else has faced a similar situation. What should I do?

Quick question: Where are you based? It might help narrow down your options for finding a good job. Seriously, though, you need to look for something healthier!

I'm in a developing country, and it's been rough trying to find good opportunities. Most clients are in developed countries and the job market here is tough.

You’re caught in what feels like a scam, and it's no wonder it feels weird. What you're experiencing isn't just poor management—it's likely illegal. You should definitely start looking for a legitimate job.

I agree! If your boss is operating this way, you and the company could be in serious trouble if clients find out. It’s rather unethical, especially since it could lead to legal repercussions.

Honestly, you should probably just quit and find something better that aligns with your new skills. Your mental health is worth more than a paycheck from this shady startup.

This definitely crosses into illegal territory. If major companies find out what’s going on, things could go south fast. Just be cautious, as your career could be at stake here.

Exactly! My guess is it’s illegal there too, but in a developing country, such activities might be more common. I think focusing on saving up to move could be a smart long-term plan.

Honestly, it sounds like you need to find a new job. This situation is not healthy for you. It’s tough out there, but a job like this can seriously damage your career long-term. Look for opportunities that offer proper training and are ethical.

It's easy to say that, but finding a viable job can be hard! I've been left with nasty experiences too. My boss keeps switching my focus to new tools without much guidance, which makes it hard to keep up.
