First Experience Installing Zorin: What Went Wrong?

I recently decided to switch from Windows to Linux and was excited to try out Zorin after testing various distros in a virtual machine. Zorin caught my attention with its elegant design reminiscent of Windows 7. Before I made the leap to a full installation, I made sure to research how to dual boot with Windows while keeping secure boot enabled.

Things started to get complicated right from the installation process. I have a three-monitor setup, which includes a vertical monitor on the right. During installation, the monitor arrangement was confusing, making it hard to see the installation prompts.

The real trouble began when I reached the partitioning stage. I chose my secondary SSD for the installation since I thought it was safer than using my primary drive with Windows. However, I got confused about where to install the GRUB bootloader; I read that it should be on the same drive as Windows to avoid complications, but I ended up putting it on the secondary SSD. After finishing the installation, I encountered a fatal error stating that GRUB couldn't be installed, and upon rebooting, Zorin was missing from my boot options. I discovered a way to install GRUB from the live USB, which worked, but it was frustrating.

To top it off, when I finally logged into Zorin, my vertical monitor displayed the login screen, and the image was flipped horizontally, causing additional issues. I ended up creating a script to turn off that monitor just to see the login screen on my main monitor.

I feel like I shouldn't have encountered so many problems during what should be a straightforward process of installing an operating system. Any advice for smoother installations in the future or tips to avoid this headache?

What hardware are you using? Sometimes specific hardware can make certain distros behave strangely during installation. If you’re still struggling, troubleshooting your hardware configurations might help streamline the process next time!

I chose Ubuntu for similar reasons to avoid these kinds of problems, and it generally offers a hassle-free experience. Zorin is Ubuntu-based, so it should have been easier, but installation woes happen with any distro, especially with complex setups like yours. To avoid these pitfalls, consider sticking to one monitor during installation to simplify the process—configuring the rest can come later!

I totally get your frustration! Multimonitor setups can cause installation hiccups. One common mistake with installations is definitely the bootloader setup—putting it on the same drive as your Linux install usually helps avoid issues. Make sure secure boot is disabled for dual-booting as it can cause driver issues too. Also, after you've installed Zorin, you can deal with display settings, which should stabilize things on first login.

It sounds like you had quite the adventure! For a smoother experience, try installing distros on real hardware instead of VMs—it can reveal some of the issues that VMs hide. Also, the GRUB installation should typically be on the same drive where the Linux distro is installed; it usually finds Windows automatically. So, for your next attempt, make sure your bootloader is configured right from the start. And about your monitor orientation issues, Zorin can use GDM settings to help with that, but it might not fix everything depending on your setup.
