Frustrations with Gaming on Mac and Apple’s Role

Hey everyone! I want to talk about my experience with Apple and Valve. Recently, I got a new 2025 MacBook that runs macOS Tahoe, which my parents gifted to me. I hoped to game on it using tools like Whiskey or Boot Camp, but it's been pretty disappointing. Steam doesn't have many games that work on the new M1 Macs and that feels like a huge letdown. Apple makes a fantastic operating system, but it seems pretty closed off for gamers. Sure, their chips are powerful, but without enough native game support, it's hard to make the most of them. I also don't want to spend a ton of money on games from the App Store or keep borrowing from friends; plus, cloud gaming hasn't worked well for me. I really want to know: Valve, why haven't you updated your games for new Macs? You have the resources to do it, so why is this still an issue? It's definitely frustrating, and I really hope things improve soon!

If you're looking to play the Windows version of Steam on a Mac, consider installing Crossover. It works well for running games that aren't optimized for macOS!

Yeah, I've got both versions going too. I run native games through the Mac version and use Crossover for others. It's pretty seamless!

Keep in mind that Valve doesn't develop most of the games on Steam. They've only made about 20 or so titles, while the rest are from third-party developers. They can't change the code of those other companies' games, which makes adapting them a monumental task. Also, Boot Camp has completely transitioned away with the switch to Apple Silicon, so that's another hurdle.

Honestly, I think it’s unfair to blame Valve for the lack of support. Apple has the tools and resources; they should be encouraging developers to create for their platform.

But for popular games like Dota and CS, it’s frustrating that Valve hasn’t put out builds for Apple Silicon. That falls on them!
