Genius Bar Saying I Have to Pay for Extra Repairs on My MacBook Pro—What Are My Options?

Hey everyone! I need some advice about a situation I'm having with my work MacBook Pro. I took it to the Genius Bar after I accidentally tripped over the charging cord and cracked the display. My workplace reluctantly agreed to cover the $500 repair for a new monitor. But now, Apple just called saying that after replacing the screen, they found that my trackpad and battery are also failing, which is strange since I never noticed any issues with either of them. They're now demanding an additional $1,000 for those repairs and said I'd be without my laptop for another week. I feel like they're holding my computer hostage unless I agree to these further repairs, which doesn't seem right. Is there any way I can just get my laptop back with the original cracked screen or handle the other repairs later? Thanks for any help!

How old is your MacBook? It sounds a bit odd that they found these issues now. You can easily check your battery health by clicking the icon in the OS. As for the trackpad, if you’re not experiencing any problems with it, the diagnostics might just be faulty. If your job doesn’t have a business account with Apple, that complicates things since you’re the Apple ID owner. But if it was working fine, you might want to just push back on them and see if declining the extra repairs is an option.

You can definitely ask them for a partial repair and say you'll take care of the other parts later. Just express to them that you’d prefer to not proceed with replacing everything right now.

It sounds like the Genius Bar has a protocol where they check for other issues after a repair. Normally, they should let you know about any additional problems they find and give you a quote for those repairs, but they can't force you to do all the work at once. If the battery and trackpad aren't physically preventing the display repair, you might still just ask them to give your laptop back with the new screen. If you're in the US, they also could reinstall the original display for you before sending it out for a flat-rate fix on all the issues later on.
