Getting Frustrated with Performance Issues on Ubuntu – Help!

Hey everyone! I switched back to Ubuntu after leaving it idle for a couple of years. I've updated it and enjoyed learning a bit about Linux. The desktop is great, and I'm loving the escape from Windows. However, I've been running into some serious performance issues lately, especially with browsers and games. My setup isn't outdated—I'm using a 4070 TI Super, Ryzen 5800x3D, 32GB RAM, and a Samsung SSD. But nothing seems to run smoothly; for example, Civ 5 is chugging along at 10 fps, City Skylines barely runs, and even long interactions in ChatGPT are slow. I've checked for the latest Nvidia drivers, I'm running on Wayland, and everything's updated via apt. It's installed on its own SSD too. Do you think a clean install of another distro would help, or is there a way to fix these performance issues without losing the customizations I made?

It sounds like your system might be defaulting to integrated graphics instead of your Nvidia GPU. You might want to check the Nvidia settings to ensure it's set to performance mode. Alternatively, right-click on your application to 'launch using dedicated graphics card.' Also, try installing MangoHud to see what GPU is actually being used during performance.

Thanks for the suggestion! I couldn't get MangoHud to work, but after troubleshooting with some commands, it turns out my system was using software rendering instead of the Nvidia card. I switched from Wayland to X11, and it seems to be using the NVIDIA GPU now. Kinda strange since Wayland should support it.
