Getting Started with Installing Linux: Tips and Resources

Hey everyone! I'm new here and I'm gearing up to install Linux, most likely Mint unless there's a better option out there. I used to dabble in Linux over ten years ago but found it pretty challenging, especially as a long-time Windows user. I'm looking for recommendations on where to download a reliable Linux installer and a good, detailed installation guide, ideally one that breaks it down simply. I assume I just need to burn a Linux ISO to a thumb drive using something like Rufus, like I did for Windows installers. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

For new users, I'd suggest checking out Hannah Montana Linux! Seriously, it's super user-friendly and fun to use.

LOL! I completely forgot that even existed!

Have you checked out linuxmint.com? They have the ISO and full instructions for the installation there, covering everything from flashing the ISO to walking through the install wizard. If you have any questions while installing, feel free to ask here or post in the Linux Mint subreddit!

I haven’t been on the Mint site in years! Last time was probably when Mint first came out. The last Linux I used was Ubuntu, and it was quite a change. With all the buzz around people switching from Windows to Linux, I really want to give it another genuine shot. Thanks for the pointers!

You should definitely check out the migration page on the Linux4Noobs wiki! They've got some great tips, especially regarding installing. By the way, Mint is really easy to install nowadays—much easier than it used to be. You can download the installer from the official Mint website; any mirror works great. Just put the ISO on a USB like you would for Windows. If you're not dual booting, you probably won’t need a deep guide; the installer is super straightforward and user-friendly. Good luck!

Thanks a lot! I was considering dual booting, but I think I'll stick to Linux for now and set up Windows on another laptop. My old Toshiba Satellite has Windows 7, and I'm ready to try Linux on my other devices. Last time I tried Ubuntu on a virtual machine, it felt quite alien, but I really want to give Linux another chance!
