Has Anyone Successfully Moved a Subdomain to a New Azure Tenant?

I'm currently facing a situation where we have both a parent domain and its subdomain under the same Azure tenant. Management has decided that we need to create a separate Azure tenant for the subdomain. I'm looking for any experiences or advice on moving a child domain to a new tenant. Has anyone done this before? Any tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

When you say 'domain', are you referring to the DNS domain? It's essentially just a DNS Zone resource in Azure, so it should be pretty straightforward. But I wouldn't suggest creating a whole new tenant just for that.

Make sure to set up a separate DNS Zone for your subdomain in your DNS management system. You should treat it like a new domain. The process for verifying the subdomain in the new tenant should be the same as usual, but honestly, try to avoid going with two tenants if you can; it can lead to double the work!

Thanks for the insights! If my parent domain is contoso.com and I have a subdomain like subdomain.contoso.com in the current tenant, can I create something like subdomain2.contoso.com in the new tenant? I realy want to avoid the nightmare of having to re-import thousands of users and their OneDrive data.

Just a heads up, managing multiple tenants can be quite a hassle. What's the reason behind the need for a new tenant? It could mean more work for your team in the long run!
