I'm curious if anyone has started using HPE VM Essentials outside of a lab setting. HPE has been pushing it pretty strongly, but my initial experiences in the lab haven't impressed me much. Has anyone made the switch or planning to do so soon?

So basically, this seems like a vendor-controlled version of Proxmox? Does anyone else think it's not quite comparable to VMware?

Yeah, it's KVM-based, very similar to Proxmox for sure.

You might want to check out this thread I found—it has some useful info. It seems like it runs KVM on Ubuntu, so some say it feels more like a Proxmox alternative than a true VMware competitor. It might not be fully mature yet, though. Also, I found documentation comparing its features to others; could be helpful!

Funny enough, that thread you linked is from the original poster here!

Take the plunge and let us know if it’s worth it! I'm also trying to get the latest version up and running in my lab, so I'm eager to hear your thoughts once you dive in.

Oh, I will! Just working on setting it up now.

HP seems to be dropping the ball with their quotes; it feels like they don’t want to make sales. We're probably going to stick with Dell and Hyper-V instead.

What’s the pricing like for this? I heard it’s pretty competitive.

It’s around $1000 per socket for a year of support. HPE is also offering big discounts if you buy their hardware, making it cheaper than VMware before Broadcom took over.
