Help! I Can’t Access My Files After Upgrading My PC

So today I upgraded my motherboard and CPU for the first time and reinstalled Windows 11 without any issues. I cloned my SSD to an external HDD for backup purposes. However, now I can see my folders on the external drive, but I can't access any of the files because I'm being told I need permission. I set the permissions to allow everyone full control, but it hasn't helped. To make matters worse, I can't access my university work, which was my only copy. I'm feeling really overwhelmed right now. Is there a way I can boot from the external drive using my old motherboard to change the permissions? I'm completely lost and don't know what to do next.

It sounds like you're dealing with file ownership issues. First, check if your folders and files are shared; if they are, look at the share permissions. If not, you might need to take ownership of the files and set full control for the 'Everyone' group. This can often resolve the permissions issue you're experiencing.

Just to clarify, did you do a fresh install on your old drive after cloning? Also, make sure hidden files were included in the clone. Sometimes, important system or hidden files can be overlooked, affecting your access. You might want to double-check those settings.

Don't panic! If you have command prompt access, you can use it to add permissions for the 'Everyone' group. Once you gain access, you should try to verify if all files—including hidden ones—were cloned properly.
