Now my iPhone X is stuck on the Activation Lock screen, and I've received an extortion demand in Russian for 15,000 KZT to 'unlock' it. I'm not paying, but I'm looking for some practical advice.

I’m not sure how you accidentally signed into another Apple ID, but it sounds like a pain! If the phone was marked lost, then unfortunately, Apple is pretty strict about the Activation Lock. As far as I know, they typically won't remove it without the original receipt, even if you have the box.
