Help! I Think I Downloaded a Virus and My Bank Info Got Stolen!

I accidentally downloaded a suspicious file from an ad while browsing online, and I opened a folder with a bizarre name that had a setup file from a site called Desura. After clicking it, my mouse acted weirdly, and I got super concerned. The next day, my bank notified me of an unauthorized withdrawal attempt from Norway, even though I live in the U.S. Thankfully, I had already disabled my card. I've changed all my passwords, but I'm really anxious about using my computer now. I'm considering a factory reset, but is there anything else I should do?

Factory resets can be hit or miss, so I’d recommend a full clean install of your OS. After that, ensure you change your passwords and remove any linked devices on your accounts. For now, monitor your bank closely; it’s good that you’re proactive!

You definitely took the right first steps by disabling your card and changing passwords. A factory reset is a good move; just make sure to reinstall the OS from a trusted source rather than a recovery option. Also, check all your accounts and log out from devices to ensure nothing else is compromised. Contact your bank to confirm they have a plan in place for your account security.

Honestly, it's pretty concerning that you opened that file in the first place. But now that you're aware, go for a clean reinstall of Windows instead of just a factory reset, as that can be more effective. After that, keep tracking your activity for any suspicious stuff. Strongly consider enabling two-factor authentication on all your accounts, too.

Don't stress too much, but do take this seriously. The best approach is a full reinstall of your operating system from a USB stick with a fresh image. Avoid storing sensitive info on your device, especially with all this going on. Use a password manager instead of saving passwords directly. And yeah, stay wary of anything that looks sketchy online going forward!
