I accidentally ended up downloading a Windows update to my external hard drive while trying to recover my laptop from that annoying blue screen of death. Now, my 2TB drive is showing up as a FAT32 format, and all my files seem to be gone. I've looked into reformatting it, but is there any way to recover my lost photos and videos? I'd really appreciate any advice!

Oh man, this is tough. It seems like you were trying to recover your laptop but ended up messing with your external drive. If you're looking to recover files, I'd suggest sending it to a professional service. They have the tools and expertise to maximize recovery chances, especially if those files are important, like your child's photos.

You've got some hope to recover those files if you act fast! Using recovery software is your best bet, but do remember this process will take time—like several hours. If your files were relatively small like photos, there's a chance you can piece some of them back together. Good luck!

Sounds like your drive might've been reformatted to a smaller FAT32 partition. The chances of getting your files back depend on what you've done since the issue occurred. Don't try to reformat it, and you could use software like R-Studio or Disk Drill for recovery. Keep in mind, you'll need a second drive to save the recovered files.

First off, take a breath and stop using that drive right now! Each time you write data, you risk overwriting what's recoverable. If you can, check what model your drive is, as that may help with specific recovery options. You might want to try some data recovery software, but the more you mess with it, the lower your chances of recovery.
