Hey everyone! I recently built my first PC, but I'm facing a frustrating issue with my AMD Ryzen 9 9950X CPU overheating during the startup process. I've noticed the temperatures can reach between 95-105°C, which is pretty concerning. Sometimes I can boot into Windows, but other times my PC shuts down before I even get that far. Here's what my build looks like:
- Case: Cooler Master NR200P V2
- Motherboard: Gigabyte X870i Aorus Pro Ice
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7900XT
- Cooler: Thermalright Aqua Elite 240 V3
- PSU: Corsair SF1000
When I manage to boot into Windows, I check HWinfo, and my CPU temperatures are still alarmingly high (around 95-100°C) right off the bat, with minimal CPU usage (~2-3%). After a few minutes, if the PC doesn't shut down, the temperatures drop to a more normal range of 40-45°C and everything runs smoothly after that. The overheating doesn't happen every time, but it happens often enough to be worrisome. I have tried a few things to fix it, like reapplying thermal paste, adjusting fan curves in the BIOS, and even undervolting the CPU with 105W ECO mode. I really need some advice to figure out if the issue is with the CPU, the cooling setup, or something else. Thanks in advance for your help!

I suspect your cooler might be to blame. When you're overheating during startup, check what your radiator fans are doing. Since they aren't connected directly to the motherboard but through a hub, this could introduce issues. You should confirm that your radiator fans are indeed running fast during boot. Maybe try plugging them into the motherboard directly!
It sounds like there might be an issue with your cooler's setup. First, check if the radiator is expelling hot air; if not, it could mean the pump isn't working properly or it's not mounted correctly. If the tubes feel vibrant, that's a good sign! If you're having issues, you might also want to consider switching to a thermalright air cooler just to be safe.
It really seems like your pump isn’t functioning correctly. When you're seeing those high temps during boot, it usually indicates water isn’t moving through the system. Check your pump's power to the motherboard, make sure the fan header is set to PWM. If it's set to DC mode, it might not be getting enough power to operate. You should definitely hear it running if it's working!
Yeah, I've seen similar problems. My high temps often appeared while booting into Windows. After tweaking my pump fan RPM, things improved! Make sure to check the settings in your BIOS to confirm the pump gets enough power to activate right away. It could be that auto mode is delaying its activation and causing the overheating. Good luck!
