I'm troubleshooting a friend's HP Pavilion laptop with a 10th gen i3 processor. It's showing an almost full drive, with 112 out of 117 GB used, but the user folder is only around 10 GB and the program files take about 30 GB. I'm puzzled about where all this missing data is being stored, and I'd appreciate any advice or tools to figure this out!

Windows itself will consume a significant amount of that space, probably a third or more. Just a heads-up, that's definitely a constrained hard drive you're working with.
Yeah, tiny drive indeed! My system has a 2 TB boot drive and 8 TB for data. Just try pulling up %appdata% in an explorer window to see if there's hidden data lying around.
I’d recommend running WizTree. It gives you a nice visual overview of what's taking up space on the drive. Also, keep in mind that 117 GB is pretty small for modern standards; not ideal for your OS and apps.
That's actually not a lot of storage to begin with. 128 GB is pretty tiny for a hard drive, especially nowadays. I even have SD cards that hold more than that!
Check out tools like Windirstat or TreeSizeFree. I personally prefer TreeSizeFree; it really helps in identifying where all your space is going. And honestly, with the way things are today, you might want to consider a drive that's at least 250 GB. I wouldn’t do less than 500 GB myself, especially since SSD prices are dropping!
