I recently built my first PC and noticed that my used GPU was running at high temperatures. I decided to replace the thermal paste with MX-6 and added Thermal Grizzly Minus 8 pads. However, after replacing them, my GPU temperatures shot up drastically even under minimal load. When I push the system to maximum load, it struggles and crashes. Can anyone provide some insights or solutions to help me fix this issue?

There are several potential issues here. First, double-check the thickness of the pads to ensure they match the originals. If you're using too much or too little thermal paste, that can also cause overheating. Make sure you applied the heatsink correctly, ideally using a criss-cross pattern. If all else fails, you may need to redo the whole application process.
Also, check if the thermal paste was spread properly. Don't just drop some on; you have to spread it out rather than relying on the weight of the cooler to do it. And keep an eye on your fan settings. Are your fans running at the right speed? If they're not plugged in or configured properly, that could lead to overheating!
I followed those steps, but the temps are still too high.
It sounds like you might have the wrong thickness for your thermal pads. Make sure they're not too thin or too thick; either one can create issues. Also, did you ensure to clean the heatsink and GPU die properly before applying the new paste? This could make a huge difference. And please double-check if you plugged all the fans back in too!
The pads are 2mm on my RX 6700 XT, but I think I might have a gap problem.

I've tried adding more paste, but it hasn’t improved the situation at all. The paste seems fine on my Ryzen 5, though!
