Help! My laptop downloaded an app from a suspicious website, what should I do?

I was using a free streaming site called Myflixer, which I've relied on for years without any issues. Since it recently shut down, I found a similar site. During my usual browsing, I was trying to quickly click out of random pop-up ads, but suddenly, my laptop downloaded an application called Opera X. I couldn't delete it at first, but after I hit cancel on a prompt asking for permission, I managed to delete it. Should I be concerned about this? Is it a virus? I've always been worried about getting hacked, so I'm feeling pretty anxious right now!

Make sure to check your browser's security settings. Generally, websites can't just install software on your device, but those sketchy ones might have ways to trick you. If something was indeed downloaded, consider uninstalling your browser and using a program like Revo Uninstaller to clean out any leftovers. You can also adjust your browser settings to block annoying pop-ups and new tabs. Remember that illegal streaming sites often have the most malware threats.

Revo Uninstaller is indeed free, which is great! If it downloaded something to your files, that could be a concern. It's not just a browser warning; you should be vigilant about what was installed. Running the Malicious Software Removal tool sounds like a good next step to help ensure your laptop is clean.

This kind of issue happens a lot with sketchy streaming sites. It sounds like you encountered a bundled installer or a deceptive download prompt that got interrupted. The good news is if you’ve managed to delete it and it’s not showing up in any startup items or installed apps, you're likely in the clear. Just to be safe, I recommend running a full malware scan, as it’s always better to be cautious. Also, try to avoid clicking on those pop-ups in the future! It's totally understandable to be worried, but from what you described, it doesn’t seem like a deep-seated infection.
