Help! My Laptop Is Acting Strange After I Was Away

I left my laptop for about 30 minutes, and when I got back, Bitdefender was bombarding me with alerts about a malicious command prompt being blocked. The command it flagged was related to C:windowssystem32wbemwmic.exe, and it reported finding 15 malicious files that look like regular PC folders, but one was oddly replaced by hklm. Even after I disabled my WiFi, I kept getting notifications about the command prompt. Upon checking the task manager, I noticed a process named WMIC repeatedly appearing and disappearing every couple of seconds. What steps should I take? I'm really worried about my laptop!

Just to clarify, HKLM usually refers to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE in the Windows registry. WMIC itself is generally harmless unless exploited. However, since you're seeing new folders that hint at registry changes, it could be related to a system update or possibly something else. Running a malware scan with Malware Bytes or Windows Defender might help ease your worries, but I wouldn't stress too much right now!

Oh, and remember this too: I noticed around the time I had WMIC alerts, I was getting notifications about OneDrive trying to connect. Keep an eye on any unusual activity related to that!

You might want to check if your Windows is up to date. The WMIC tool is no longer included in Windows 11 from version 25H2 onwards, which means it shouldn’t be an issue if your system is updated. Also, don’t forget to follow any malware removal guides to be sure everything’s clean!

I did update Windows, but the issue is still there. Another commenter mentioned Bitdefender’s update causing this, which is a bit unsettling.

Sounds like you've hit a bit of a snag with Bitdefender! A lot of folks have been experiencing similar issues after the latest update. The commands might not be as sketchy as they seem. My advice? First, look into the WMIC issue about uninstalling it from Settings > System > Optional Features. It's actually outdated in newer versions of Windows, so that might take care of the alerts!

Thanks for that info! I had no idea about uninstalling WMIC, so I appreciate the suggestion.

No problem! Happy to help ease your nerves. Make sure to check for any malware just to be safe!
