Help! My laptop’s camera stopped working after installing Zorin OS 18

I recently switched to Zorin OS 18 on a Lenovo 82C7 laptop to help me and my wife transition from Windows. Initially, the camera worked fine, but now, a few days later, it's not being detected at all. I've tested every possible fix I could think of—restarting, checking BIOS settings, and even using terminal commands like 'lsusb' and 'dmesg'—but nothing shows that the camera is connected. I suspect it might be a hardware issue, possibly with the internal ribbon cable, but I'm not sure. Any advice on getting the camera to work again would be really appreciated!

Honestly, it's a long shot, but if the camera isn’t being recognized at all, it could be a hardware defect. You mentioned it was working post-install, which suggests something might have happened physically since then. If you can’t get it to work after other troubleshooting, consider checking the hardware connections. It's frustrating, I know!

It sounds like there might be a hardware issue, especially since the camera isn’t showing up in the ‘lsusb’ output. Sometimes, the internal ribbon cable connecting the camera can get worn out, especially in laptops that have been opened and closed a lot.

You could try resetting the power by unplugging the laptop, holding the power button for about 60 seconds, and then starting it up again. This could help reset the USB controller and possibly detect the camera again. Also, when you press Fn+F8, it might be unintentionally turning the camera off. Try running 'rfkill list all' in the terminal to see if the camera is blocked. If you find it's blocked, you might be able to unblock it and get things working again.

I get why you might be frustrated with Zorin, but calling it malware is a bit much. It's just a customized version of Ubuntu. If you're having persistent issues with it, switching to a more established distro with a robust community might be a smarter choice, but Zorin shouldn’t have these issues by default.

Have you thought about testing another distro using a live USB? If the camera gets detected with a different operating system, then the issue might be specific to your Zorin installation. Otherwise, it might be a hardware failure, particularly if it doesn't show up at all.
