Hey folks, I've just built my first gaming PC and I'm running into a strange problem with my power supply. When I power it on, everything lights up for about one second—the fans spin, the RGB lights flash—but then it shuts off immediately. I've checked all the connections and made sure everything is seated correctly.
There's a bit of a puzzle with my CPU 8-pin (4x4) cable. Some cables fit my motherboard's CPU power port but don't fit into the CPU/PCI-E ports on the power supply. One cable fits both ends but has a pin missing on the PSU side. I have three cables, none of which are labeled, and I'm unsure which ones are for the EPS/CPU power.
I'm beginning to think the cables I received might not be the right ones, possibly just PCI-E cables, since the PC shuts down right away. Here are my specs:
- PSU: Gigabyte UD850GM
- Motherboard: GIGABYTE B650
- GPU: Radeon 9600 XT
- CPU: AMD RYZEN 7 7700X
I've also uploaded some pictures of the cables I'm working with, the one currently connected to the PSU is the one with the missing pin. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You definitely want to use the correct EPS/CPU cable. It should be a 4+4 or an 8-pin setup. If you're working with a cable that’s 6+2, that one’s specifically for the GPU. Also, don’t forget to share your images so we can help you identify what cables you have!
It sounds like you might be using the wrong cable. The EPS/CPU cable should have the designation on the thicker end, and usually, it should be a 4+4 or 8-pin configuration. Make sure you’re plugging the PSU end in the correct way; these cables are typically designed to fit one way only. Also, try not to turn on the PC too many times as it might cause damage!
Thanks for the advice! I'm really trying to be careful. Could you check out the pictures I posted and see if you can help me identify the right cables? They don't have any labels, which makes it really confusing!
I hear you! Some brands do label their cables, but it’s not consistent. If you find a cable that’s 6+2, that's definitely for the GPU, not the CPU.

Here are the pictures of the cables I have: https://imgur.com/a/d2KtYyq. Let me know what you think!
