Help! My PC is Constantly Disconnecting from My Monitor and Freezing

I'm having major issues with my computer where it frequently disconnects from my monitor, usually only reconnecting after I force a restart with the power button. This problem popped up just today and happens about every 15 minutes. I'm worried it might happen while I'm typing this!

Also, can anyone tell me if using a custom resolution of 1600x1440 will damage my PC or monitor? My native resolution is 2560x1440, so this would be downscaling, but I'm unsure because the resolution is 10:9 and I don't want anything to get messed up.

My PC is a prebuilt model from eBay, and about every 3 to 4 weeks, I encounter some weird issues that force me to factory reset it. Sometimes, it displays a message saying 'something went wrong and your PC needs to restart', but more often, it freezes and restarts, then goes into a cycle of saying something in the kernel is missing or part of Windows isn't there.

On top of all that, there have been multiple times when my PC won't connect to the internet. My Wi-Fi shows up, the troubleshooter says everything is fine, yet I can't actually get online. It's frustrating because my family's devices are working just fine while I've been stuck troubleshooting for hours.

Oh, and just for some context, I couldn't figure out how to open my PC case for about 5 months after I bought it, but I managed to clean the dust out, and it didn't seem to change anything. The first time a reset was necessary happened just three weeks after I got the PC.

I really want to get to the bottom of this issue since it cost me a lot of money. Just now, while playing Minecraft, my PC froze, the monitor disconnected, and I heard a buzzing sound before it shut off entirely. This seems like a symptom of a crash rather than just a monitor issue. Should I reset my PC for the sixth time, or would it be better to take it to a repair shop? I'm at a loss for what to do!

It sounds like you're dealing with some frustrating issues! For the monitor disconnecting, it could be a hardware problem. I had a similar experience at my work where swapping the monitor fixed the connection drops. However, since yours has just started happening recently, it might be worth testing the cables or even trying a different monitor to see if the issue persists.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll look into trying a different cable or monitor if this keeps happening. It’s such a hassle!

You might be feeling overwhelmed, but it's crucial to check your internal components. I suggest running diagnostics to test your RAM, storage, and CPU. For RAM, use MemTest86+ to check for errors, and if you have multiple sticks, test them one at a time. For the internal storage, GSmartControl can analyze the health of your hard drive. It could help pinpoint if any component is failing.

That sounds really complicated, though. I wouldn’t even know how to get to the RAM area! Just putting it together again after cleaning was a challenge for me.

Your constant connection issues could point to deeper problems, like overheating or hardware failure. If you can, try to monitor the temperature of your components, especially when gaming, as overheating can cause crashes and disconnects. If it’s getting too hot, that might trigger the problems you're seeing. And if all else fails, don’t hesitate to reach out to a local tech support for help; they can dive in and take a closer look.
