Help! My Ryzen 7 5800X is Overheating at Low Usage

I recently picked up a Ryzen 7 5800X and updated the BIOS. However, I've been having overheating issues; it spikes up when usage hits just 10%, and I can hear the fans ramping up. I noticed a small amount of thermal paste on the pins initially, but I've cleaned it off, and the pins aren't bent. I've re-seated and repasted the CPU five times already, but the problem persists. My previous CPU doesn't have this issue, so I'm wondering if the problem lies with the CPU itself or if it's a system issue. I bought it used from eBay. Once the CPU is idling, the temperatures normalize, which has me thinking it might be something else. Can anyone help?

Sounds like your CPU is definitely heating up way too fast for just basic tasks. It's possible that your cooling solution isn’t adequate, even if the fans are running. Have you checked if the cooler is properly mounted? Sometimes if it's not seated well or if there's an issue with contact, it can cause big temperature spikes. Just a thought!

Yeah, I opened Chrome, and it jumped up to 55°C, but I heard that’s pretty normal when just browsing.

You might want to try monitoring your temps and load more closely. Use software like HWMonitor to get a better picture of what's happening. I had a similar issue once due to a misconfigured setting in BIOS that was ramping up voltage unnecessarily. Maybe check those settings too!

That’s a good point! I've read that sometimes just an incorrect BIOS setting can lead to overheating, even if the hardware is fine.
