Hey everyone! I'm new here, and I'm in quite a spot. I bought a custom-built PC about two years ago, but it's not performing well at all. I want to upgrade it, but I've got zero knowledge about PC components, and as a broke college student, my budget is around 400€ (about 370$). Currently, my build includes:
- GTX 1050 graphics card
- An old i5 processor
- Biostar H81MHV3 motherboard
- 4GB of DDR3 RAM (I know, it's outdated!)
- 256GB SSD (2.5")
I mainly want to play Genshin Impact, Honkai Star Rail, and some indie games. A friend of mine mentioned that if I stick with DDR3, I could upgrade to 32GB of RAM, but I'm not sure. I would really appreciate any suggestions on how I can upgrade my setup within my budget! Thanks a lot!

I’d recommend checking out a used AM4 kit (motherboard + CPU + RAM). The used market for DDR4 might be a bit tricky, but it's worth looking into. Staying with DDR3 means you're stuck with older CPUs, which could bottleneck any future GPU upgrades. Aim for a DDR4 setup if you can; it’ll give you a decent performance boost. You could get around 16GB of DDR4 RAM that’s faster, and a 6-core CPU would enhance your experience too. Also, consider a B550 (AMD) or B760 (Intel) motherboard for modern connectivity options. If your case is compact, you might need a smaller motherboard, but you could always get a new ATX case, which is usually affordable! Plus, you'll have room to upgrade your GPU and power supply later. This approach would benefit your system more in the long run than just upgrading the GPU now. Here’s a possible build example: [insert link].
Absolutely! Those parts should work well with your GTX 1050. Just double-check compatibility for reassurance, and if you need help putting it together, I’m sure your uncle can guide you!
Upgrading to an AM4 set with a motherboard, CPU, and RAM is a solid option for better performance. Just keep in mind that this route may not leave you much budget for a GPU upgrade, and installation could be tricky if you're not experienced. But overall, it’ll make your system faster. Good luck with the upgrade!
Honestly, what you have now is pretty much on its last legs, and investing in it might not yield great results. But with your budget, you could find a used GTX 1080 Ti, just make sure your power supply can handle it (you'll want at least 550-650W). Definitely grab that 32GB of RAM; you'll notice a big difference. Regarding the processor, you could check which one your motherboard supports, but I wouldn’t prioritize that for now. Also, consider upgrading the SSD—256GB is just too small these days!

Thanks for the suggestions! The build you mentioned seems perfect for my needs. Are all those parts compatible with my current GPU? If so, I’m ready to order them as soon as possible!
