Help! Where Did My Photos Go on My iPhone?

I'm facing a terrible situation with my photos. I used to have around 16,000 pictures on my iPhone 14 Pro, but now it only shows 5,000. My MacBook has over 10,000 photos, but it stopped syncing in September 2023, and I'm not sure why. I've checked iCloud, and it only mirrors the 5,000 photos on my iPhone. I'm really worried because I had pictures of my deceased loved ones that I cannot afford to lose. I recently upgraded my iCloud storage, yet I still can't find any of my older photos. Is there something I might be missing or something I can do to recover them?

It's important to clarify how you've been syncing your photos. If you synced your iPhone with your Mac before enabling iCloud Photos, this might have removed some older photos when you switched to iCloud. You can’t use both types of syncing simultaneously. If you got a notification about being low on storage, that might have triggered some issues too.

Thanks for the info! I did get that low-storage warning, which is why I bumped up my iCloud storage. Sounds like I might need to check how I set up the syncing.
