I recently attempted to downgrade my laptop from Windows 11 back to Windows 10. I followed all the necessary steps, including creating a backup system image of my drives before starting the installation. The installation seemed to go fine and took an entire day. After that, I tried restoring my drives from the external hard drive where I saved the backup, but to my surprise, Windows 11 was installed again. I'm confused about what I might have done wrong. Can anyone help me figure this out?

If you're looking for the fastest solution, I'd suggest just reformatting your drive and using a Windows 10 installer directly. That way, you can start fresh without leftover Windows 11 files messing things up.
It sounds like you might have accidentally cloned your Windows 11 installation instead of just backing up your files. When you restored from the backup, it reinstated the existing version instead of rolling back to 10. To avoid this, make sure you select the correct drives during the backup process next time!
I've heard from several people that downgrading from Windows 10 to 11 didn't go well for them either, so you're not alone here. Sometimes these processes can get tricky, especially if you're dealing with system images.

I didn't realize it was a clone either! Is there a way to back up just the C drive without cloning?
