I recently put together a new PC featuring an MSI Z490-A-Pro motherboard and an i5-11600K CPU. However, I'm experiencing some serious temperature spikes, hitting up to 96°C! I'm not sure why this is happening. I've already ordered a new CPU cooler. The previous owner mentioned that I might be getting too much voltage to the CPU since the previous one wasn't unlocked. It's been quite a while since I built a PC, so I could really use some troubleshooting advice. Thanks for your help!

If you're looking for a cooler that could potentially help, I found this one on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D97Q33GW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share. I've used similar coolers and they tend to work well. Just make sure your case has good airflow to maximize cooling efficiency.
First off, just a quick heads up: the correct CPU name is the i5-11600K, not the one you mentioned. As for the temperature issues, they commonly arise from either improper thermal paste application or an issue with your cooler. You might want to check if everything is fitted correctly and if the thermal paste is applied properly.
A spike to 96°C is pretty concerning, especially for an i5. Typically, that level of temp is more normalized for an i9. When was the last time you replaced the thermal paste? It usually needs changing every 3-5 years as it can dry out and lose effectiveness. Also, what CPU cooler and case are you using? That could affect airflow and cooling capacity.
I just replaced the thermal paste about 3 weeks ago and I've got an MSI branded cooler. Not sure about the case brand though.
Thanks for the clarification! I’ll double-check the thermal paste and cooler.
