Help with RAM Installation Issues

I recently tried to install some DDR4 RAM from an old PC into my current setup. After removing the original RAM sticks, I found that the new RAM sticks from the older machine are not being detected. I've tried applying even pressure on both sides, but they just won't click into place like the original ones did. Only the top latch engages, and it seems like the bottom latch isn't working. My PC turns on for about 15 seconds and then shuts off, which makes me think that the RAM isn't seated properly, even though I can hear the click. I'm really hoping it's just a seating issue, but I'm worried I might have damaged my motherboard in the process. What should I do?

You probably didn’t fry your motherboard. This kind of issue is often tied to RAM seating problems. Make sure you power down everything and try reseating the original RAM sticks first in the recommended slots. Once you get it to boot properly, you can experiment with adding the second set of RAM sticks. Avoid mixing old and new RAM until you know the system is stable with just the original set.

Do you have any pictures of the RAM and slots? It might help to see if there’s any visible issue or alignment problem.

I don’t think I can share photos at the moment, but I’ll describe what I see better if needed.

First off, make sure both the RAM sticks and your motherboard are DDR4 compatible. Dirt or debris in the RAM slots can also cause problems, so try cleaning them out carefully. If the issue persists, it’s likely a seating problem. Many DDR4 motherboards only have a single latch per slot, so it might be normal for one side not to snap up. Shut down your PC, clear the CMOS, and then try reseating your original RAM in slots A2 and B2. Press down firmly until both edges are flush. Stick with just the original RAM for now to see if it boots, then you can try adding the new sticks one at a time.

Thanks for the tip! I'll double-check the compatibility and try cleaning the slots. I really hope it's just a seating issue.
