How can a small remote team effectively monitor employee productivity?

I'm working with a client who has a small remote team of about 3 to 5 employees. They have no physical office and everyone is working from home using the company's tech. The client is looking for a way to monitor their employees' productivity since they currently have no idea what tasks they're doing during work hours. Their main concern is how long it often takes for team members to respond to messages on WhatsApp. They want to know if Microsoft Viva would be a good tool for this, since it provides insights on productivity and collaboration. However, I'm not really familiar with Viva's practical applications for this type of use. Besides Viva, are there other Microsoft tools or alternative solutions that could help them track metrics like meeting times and attendee numbers?

I hear you! A lot of people are right that this is mainly a management issue. However, if your client is set on using a tool, MoniTask comes highly recommended by some. Just remember, these tools alone won’t solve the underlying issues if the management part isn't also addressed.

Honestly, it sounds more like a management issue than an IT one. If the client isn't clear on what goals and performance indicators they expect from their employees, that's a bigger problem. Instead of looking at productivity tracking tools, suggest they focus on defining what success looks like for their team first.

If the client really wants to monitor communications and responses, maybe consider using tools that focus on project management and collaboration rather than strict monitoring. Things like Asana or Trello can help keep project visibility high without infringing too much on employee privacy.

Tracking productivity through tech alone isn't effective. It’s really about whether employees meet their deadlines and quality standards. If work is getting done on time without issues, then the problem may not be with productivity at all.
