How Can I Access an Old External Hard Drive That Keeps Freezing?

I've been going through my grandfather's belongings and found an old external hard drive labeled 'Moving Star EMV35BK.' When I plug it into my Windows 10 laptop, the file explorer tends to freeze or close unexpectedly. The box suggests it was made by B&B Electronics, with a completion date of 02/02/08 and model number MES1B. I could really use some advice on how to access this drive. Is this issue related to hardware or software?

First off, check if the drive makes any strange noises. That could indicate damage. I suggest downloading CrystalDiskInfo to assess the S.M.A.R.T. values. Also, you can open diskmgmt.msc to see if your PC recognizes the device properly.

If you're struggling with Windows, you might want to try accessing the drive using macOS or Linux. They handle failing drives differently, often managing to read them when Windows can't. In my experience, it’s usually a good backup plan if Windows is freezing up.
