How Can I Access Files on a Write-Protected Drive?

I recently faced a challenge with my girlfriend's computer that wouldn't boot into Windows. To get things running, I installed Windows on a new drive, but I still have the old drive which I can connect. The problem is that I'm locked out of the user files because I don't have the necessary permissions to access them. The system keeps saying that these old Windows files are write-protected, and every time I attempt to change the permissions, I encounter constant notifications about different files being write-protected. I've been clicking 'continue' on each notification, but it's tedious. I really just want to retrieve the documents and files from the old drive. Any suggestions or solutions would be greatly appreciated!

Firstly, don't try to change the permissions directly. Instead, when you try accessing a file and it prompts you for permissions, just hit 'continue.' Windows can sometimes adjust the permissions itself if the drive is functioning properly. It sounds like your drive might be write-protected due to being an SSD that may be failing. Can you clarify which type of drive it is?

I actually tried that approach, but it didn’t help. It’s an M.2 drive.
