I'm trying to help my father who had a stroke a few months ago so we can get his affairs in order for long-term care. We have access to his Microsoft Online account after figuring out the password. However, we can't access his laptop because the password isn't working. I managed to log in using the 'net user' command and reached the local desktop, but my father created a new Microsoft account, which means we can't see any local files stored in the folder for his old username. Is there a way to connect this laptop to his cloud account so I can reset the laptop password?

I'm really sorry to hear what you're going through. Since you have his Microsoft account, it should usually sync with his laptop. Try logging in with those credentials directly on the laptop. Just remember, if you encounter issues, it might be due to the new password not syncing correctly.
Have you tried accessing the admin account? It might let you reset his password directly without needing the previous one. Just a thought!
It sounds like a tough situation. You might want to use a tool called Profwiz from Forensit to migrate the profile to a local account. It has a user-friendly interface and can make things easier. If you're looking for extra security, Transwiz is another option to back up the profile before making changes.
I'll check out Profwiz, thanks for the suggestion!
Have a look at GrabAccess on GitHub; it could help with accessing his local files. Worth checking out!

We only got access to the MS account after guessing his Yahoo password for 2FA. Unfortunately, even with the new password, it hasn't worked on the laptop.
