How Can I Access My Late Father’s Locked iPhone?

Hey everyone, I'm in a really tough spot right now and could use some help. My father unexpectedly passed away from a heart attack, and he was found with his locked iPhone. I believe that accessing his phone could provide insights into what he was doing right before his passing, like who he last called or what messages he exchanged. Unfortunately, I don't know his Apple ID, password, or phone passcode. I have access to his Gmail, but couldn't find any relevant emails from Apple. I also recovered his SIM card, but I'm unsure if that number is linked to his Apple ID.

I'm not very familiar with how the Apple ecosystem works, so I'm completely lost on the following:
- How is the Apple ID linked to the phone?
- Can his SIM or Gmail be used to reset the Apple ID?
- Does Apple Support assist in cases where the account holder has passed away?
- Any tips on retrieving data like call logs, messages, or location information?

Time is of the essence for me since my family wants to reset the phone soon, and I'm worried that I might miss the chance to find out what happened if they do. I'd really appreciate any guidance or personal experiences you can share. Thanks for taking the time to read this!

I’m really sorry for your loss. The best chance you have might be if your father set up a Legacy Contact. Apple has a support page about it, which could really help if you haven’t checked it out yet. If he didn’t, things can get tricky.

Unfortunately, Apple really prioritizes privacy, which makes these situations difficult. Still, if you have access to his active phone number or email, you might be able to recover his account. Just know that you’ll likely need some legal documentation to prove your relationship for Apple to grant you access.

I’ll look into the legal documents you mentioned, but I thought I could at least use his Gmail to access the account first?
