How can I dual boot Windows and Linux on my laptop?

I'm a beginner seeking help to dual boot Windows and Linux on my laptop. I mainly use it for coding and gaming, but I've heard great things about Linux and I'm keen to try it out. However, my sister also uses this laptop and isn't familiar with Linux, so I need to keep Windows for gaming as well. I've never installed Linux before—I don't know anything about distributions like Mint or how dual booting works. I'm looking for guidance on installing Linux, preferably on an external SSD where I can keep separate drives for Windows and Linux. I'm also open to any beginner-friendly resources or videos that can help me get started.

Dual booting isn’t as scary as it seems! Just pay attention during the installation process and don't rush through it. Installing Linux on an external drive is a viable option, but keep in mind that performance might not be as good because of the USB connection. Just make sure to choose a distribution that’s lightweight and fits your needs. Back up your data first, and then you can easily choose which OS to boot into, depending on whether your external drive is connected or not.

That’s a good point! I noticed that my games run quite well from my external SSD, so I’m guessing the performance hit might not be too bad. Just make sure to check the read and write speeds to ensure it can handle the OS.

First off, make sure to back up all your important data just in case something goes wrong. For getting started, I highly recommend checking out the YouTube channel 'Explaining Computers.' They have a video on switching to Linux, and another one specifically about installing Linux Mint. These guides cover what you need to know to begin your Linux journey. Here's a link to the initial video to help you start: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8vmXvoVjZw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8vmXvoVjZw)

Just a heads up: you can still use your external drive for storage while having Linux installed. Once you make it bootable, you can allocate space on it to store other files. Just manage your partitions carefully to keep everything organized!

After ensuring you've backed up everything, you could make an external hard drive bootable with a Linux distribution. When the drive is connected, you can boot into Linux, and when it’s not, you’ll boot into Windows. This setup allows you to choose which OS to load at boot time. Just remember, the performance might be slightly reduced when running Linux from an external drive.
