How Can I Effectively Learn Programming?

Hey everyone! I'm a 19-year-old about to dive into my second year at university. Honestly, I'm pretty stressed because I have a big exam coming up, and I feel like I'm going to fail. It's frustrating, and I realize I need to make a change. I want to genuinely learn programming instead of just scraping by with luck and prayers.

My biggest hurdles are my procrastination and indecision about how to start learning programming. I'm unsure of what resources to use—should I go for YouTube tutorials, books, or something else? I also struggle with understanding some basic coding concepts, especially in Java. It's like I get the theory, but the way the code is structured just doesn't click for me. I know I sound a bit lost right now, and I appreciate you taking the time to read this. Thanks, and stay hydrated!

You really should start from the basics—things like understanding variables, types, control flow, and functions. It seems like you might not find it fun right now. Without some interest, learning can be really tough. Try to think about what parts of programming intrigue you and start from there!

Yeah, I guess I’ll have to begin with the fundamentals. But how do I even start? It might seem like I’m not enjoying it, but it’s just really hard when I feel like I’m failing.
