How can I factory reset my old work MacBook without the password?

I'm in a bit of a dilemma with my old work MacBook Pro from 2016. I had to switch jobs last year due to my previous company going through bankruptcy, and during that time, I was supposed to return the laptop but never received the shipping materials I needed. Eventually, I got an email from the IT department stating that I was allowed to keep the device and they offered help to wipe it remotely. However, I only saw that email months later after the company closed its doors. Now, I'm looking for ways to unlock or factory reset the MacBook since I'd hate to waste it. Do you think Apple might help if I show them that email? Can they verify it was mine while the company was still operational? Also, just a heads up, the MacBook has a busted butterfly keyboard, and I want to give it to a friend who could really use it.

You can try booting into recovery mode and see if you can erase and reinstall macOS from there. Just a heads up though, if it’s tied to MDM, it might lock you out again during setup.

I ran into an issue there too. When I tried it, it asked me for a password I didn't remember. If it requests a recovery key instead, that might be a dead end for you.
